Character History:
Gustavus Ing was a peasant who was born with an innate affinity for the earth. His early, unshaped talent with magik allowed him to perform a few tricks which made him a curiosity in his home village of Drury-by-Water.
Always an adventurous boy, he often goaded his friends into accompanying him into the border country near the River Yoleth, less than a day's walk from the village. One day he witnessed a skirmish taking place between Karandian and Icaran soldiers, and he crept closer to watch. He paid the price for his curiosity by triggering a magikal trap; the resultant explosion launched him into the air. When Gustavus regained consciousness, the world had been engulfed in a high-pitched keening sound, and everyone's voices seemed muffled to him. His ears were bleeding, his body was bruised, and he was surrounded by Karandian soldiers with concerned expressions. Fortunately a White Talon had been present with the soldiers, and she knitted his broken bones back together with her restorative magik. Unfortunately, he never quite recovered his hearing.
Wanting a better life for himself than what his father had, he traveled to the nearest town to enlist in the Karandian Army as soon as he was of age. He was worried that his damaged hearing would prevent him from being accepted into the ranks. To his relief and delight, his inherent magikal abilities were detected by a Talon assisting the recruiters, and he was inducted into the Mage Corps. He has tried to make up for his hearing problem with diligence and determination in fulfilling his duties.
Since his academy training, Ing has served along the borderlands, fortifying military encampments and guard towers.
